Step 1: Prepare Tools and Materials

Park your vehicle on level ground, engage the parking brake, and ensure the engine is cool (to avoid burns). You'll need: a pair of gloves, an oil filter wrench (bowl-type or pliers-type), a sufficiently large oil pan, a new oil filter of the specified model, fresh motor oil, and a rag. Always consult your vehicle's owner's manual to confirm the correct part number and oil specification.

Step 2: Drain Old Oil and Locate Filter

Locate the drain plug on the oil pan. Position the oil pan underneath. Use the wrench to unscrew the plug counterclockwise, allowing all old oil to drain completely. During this time, locate the old oil filter. It is typically a cylindrical metal canister mounted on the side or bottom of the engine block.

Step 3: Remove the Old Filter

Move the oil pan beneath the filter (which contains old oil). Use an oil filter wrench to grip the filter and firmly loosen it counterclockwise. Once loosened, finish unscrewing it by hand. Carefully place the old filter into the oil pan with the opening facing upward. Thoroughly wipe the filter mounting surface on the engine with a rag.

Step 4: Install the New Filter

Take the new filter and apply a small amount of fresh oil to the rubber gasket around its top rim—this ensures a seal and facilitates future removal. Align the new filter with the threads and hand-tighten it clockwise. Once the gasket contacts the base, typically hand-tighten it another 3/4 to 1 turn. Follow the specific instructions on the new filter packaging; never over-tighten using tools.

Step 5: Finalize and Inspect

Re-tighten the oil pan drain bolt (it is recommended to replace the gasket). Add the specified amount of new engine oil through the oil filler port. Wait a moment, then check the oil level using the dipstick (it should be between the markings). Finally, start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Shut off the engine and wait one to two minutes. Carefully inspect for leaks around the new filter and drain plug. Once everything is confirmed normal, be sure to properly dispose of the old oil and filter according to regulations.
