What is a Micron Rating on an Oil Filter?
A micron (micrometer) is one-millionth of a meter. To put this in perspective, a human hair is roughly 70 microns in diameter, and the human eye cannot see particles smaller than 40 microns. A micron rating oil filter specification indicates the size of the particles the filter media is capable of capturing. In modern engine applications, particles in the 10 to 20-micron range cause the most severe wear on bearings, cylinders, and journals.
Nominal Micron Rating vs. Absolute Rating: The Critical Difference
This is where many procurement managers fall into a trap. Manufacturers use two different standards to test and report their filter's efficiency:
Nominal Micron Rating: A nominal micron rating means the filter can capture a certain percentage (usually 50% to 90%) of particles of a specified size. For example, a filter with a nominal rating of 20 microns might only trap 50% of the 20-micron particles passing through it. This is a vague standard often used by lower-tier manufacturers to make their products sound better than they are.
Absolute Micron Rating: This is the rigorous B2B standard. An absolute rating means the filter will capture 98.6% or more of particles at a specified size. If an OEM factory states an absolute rating of 20 microns, the filter will reliably stop virtually all 20-micron particles.
Why Sourcing the Right Micron Rating Oil Filter Matters
Commercial fleets and modern high-pressure diesel engines (like Common Rail systems) demand precise filtration. If a distributor imports oil filters based only on a misleading nominal micron rating, the end-users will experience accelerated engine wear due to microscopic debris scoring the metal surfaces. To build a reputation as a premium distributor, you must demand absolute micron rating test data (such as ISO 4548-12 standards) from your manufacturing partners.
